With support from the Government of Canada through the Afriplastics Challenge, we are excited to announce the launch of our new behavioral change campaign to combat plastic pollution: The PlasticWize Fellowship.
Today, Nigeria sits comfortably among the top 20 countries in the world that contribute to marine plastic pollution. In May 2022, U-recycle surveyed a total of 1318 students from 160 tertiary in 36 states in Nigeria. From this research, it was discovered that about 7 in 10 Nigerian University students have never heard of the term “marine plastic pollution”, and consequently, have no idea about its meaning. This is not a surprise, however, as this research agrees with previous studies which have identified universities as a hotspot for single-use plastic overconsumption, excessive waste generation, and littering.
To nip this crisis in the bud, we will be embarking on a new behavioral change campaign called “The PlasticWize Fellowship”. The Fellowship is focused on catalyzing behavioral change amongst university students across Nigeria towards mitigating marine plastic pollution. This campaign features capacity-building programs and widespread creative interventions to educate University Students deeply on how to reduce their plastic footprints. In addition, it will be spearheaded by 30 young, female undergraduates who will be called the “PlasticWize Fellows”.

Read about the plasticwize fellowship in details…
We released a call for application for the PlasticWize Fellowship on 27th July, 2022 and we received applications from over 700 female undergraduates from over 120 tertiary institutions across Nigeria. The first stage of the selection process involved an intensive review of these applications. From this stage, we shortlisted 171 applicants who went on to participate in the PlasticWize Bootcamp.
The PlasticWize Bootcamp was a leadership development program that trained our participants to become key sustainability leaders. However, asides serving as a means of equipping women with essential 21st century skills, it also served as the second-stage of the PlasticWize Fellowship application process.
Using carefully hand-picked metrics, we shortlisted the 171 individuals who participated in the Bootcamp to 60 students from 10 universities across Nigeria, with 5 students from each school. These students were invited for an interview session where we tested their critical thinking skills, leadership skills, creativity, resilience, and passion for the environment, just to mention a few.
We are glad to announce that after undergoing a 3-stage selection process, 30 female undergraduates have been selected as our PlasticWize Fellows.Out of over 700 applicants, their intellectual & emotional prowess stood out. We are proud of them and we believe in their capabilities.
After demonstrating significant potential, 30 young, female undergraduates have been selected from six universities across Nigeria as the inaugural PlasticWize Fellows, namely: University of Lagos (UNILAG); Adekunle Ajasin University, Ondo; University of Ilorin; Obafemi Awolowo University, Ife (OAU); the University of Benin (UNIBEN); and Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH).

Over the next 4 months, we will be collaborating with them to launch transformative behavioural campaigns and projects geared towards tackling plastic pollution across their respective universities through 4 sub-projects: an innovation workshop, a 21-day #IamPlasticWize challenge, an installation of a monument, and a university policy adoption.
Asides from tackling the plastic pollution crisis, the PlasticWize Fellowship will also serve as an avenue to promote youth development, and in particular, women and girls!
